This Past Weekend...

United Youth Subcommittee Program Completion

It was a memorable event where the youth who are part of the UYS attended the final meeting and received their citations from Mayor Brett Smiley of Providence. The Mayor expressed his gratitude to all attendees and personally presented each of our youth with their citations in the presence of family and friends during the closing ceremony.

The event was filled with joy and celebration, featuring delicious food, a DJ, face painting, storytelling activities, and much more for the entire family to enjoy. In attendance from the Oasis Youth Teams were Sofia Alabede, Hope Badejo, Tyra Shode, and Wujuudat Balogun, an Oasis Young professional.

A big thank you to everyone who came to the recent Oasis No Menthol Sunday event. It was a tremendous success, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to making it such a memorable day.

A special shout-out to Minister Pam Byrd of the RI Ministers Alliance and Religions House of Faith, the Oasis Youth Group, Dr. Celeste Terry-Lo, Chairperson of the Providence Human Relations Commission, Mr. Harold Omisore, President of Oasis International, and Tanya Gilbert of the Department of Health TCP Department. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Oasis Board and staff members who attended, as well as Shannon and Elise from the Consultant firm to DOH.

The program's focus was on mobilizing menthol awareness within our community. By combining faith and medicine, we can truly save lives. Please keep an eye out for our next community conversation on the topic of mobilizing menthol awareness.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The 32th Annual African Summer Bash will take place on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, at Dexter Training Field in Providence from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event is a collaborative effort of the City of Providence Dept of Arts, Culture & Tourism the African communities of Rhode Island & Oasis International -The African Center of Rhode Island.

Help us make this a fully representative Bash that will spotlight our magnificent cultures.

"Amazing Kids Zone" including an obstacle course, face painting, games and lots of fun games and surprises! Experience foods from various regions of African including Jollof Rice! So many to challenge your taste buds!

There will be a Providence Health Center Wellness Team onsite for the community in addition to the Neighborhood Health Plan of RI, Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI, Butler Hospital Memory & Ageing. These professionals will provide health information and screenings. Come out and get your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checked for free. Getting these simple screenings can identify a problem allowing for initial treatment and prevention of serious health problems.

The Summer Bash provides you the opportunity to network, find out what is new in the African Community. Come All to a Free Community Event!

Bring your blanket & chair - Enjoy yourself! It's time to enjoy our community. Many vendor opportunities are available.

Oasis International African Center of RI Annual Gala December 7, 2024

Oasis International - African Center of Rhode Island, a nonprofit social service agency located at 600 Broad Street in Providence that promotes and celebrates the varied African cultures in Rhode Island will be celebrating its 2024 scholarship and awards celebration on Saturday, December 7, 2024. The theme of the Gala is “Celebrating our Victories and Preserving our Heritage- As we open New Doors.” The nonprofit celebrates 33 years of continuous services to the Southwest community of Providence with a jubilee annual dinner and awards fundraiser to support continuing youth program services.

The event will begin at 6 PM starting with a cocktail reception at The Rhodes on the Pawtuxet at 60 Rhodes Place in Cranston, Rhode Island followed by a dinner and awards presentation program that begins at 7:30 PM. The keynote speaker of the evening is Congressman Gabe Amo.

Community Service Awards will be presented to Linda Avant Deishini, Exec. Director of St. Martin de Porres Center in Providence; Shane Lee -Director of Training & Special Projects at Nonviolence Institute, Providence; and Shawndell Burney Speaks – CEO/Owner, S. Burney- Speaks Consulting, LLC. Life. The Oasis International Young Professional Award is awarded to Oluwatoyin Omisore Founder/Chief of Roamloud, a premium brand of activewear and athleisure apparel. The Oasis Professional Achievement Awardee is presented to Revive Therapeutic Services. The President’s Circle Award is awarded to Joyce K. Jonah – President of the United African Women RIA nominated by the African Community Leadership Forum (ACLF).

Oasis International will award college scholarships to high school students who have been leaders among their peers. The 2024 finalists’ youth receiving scholarships will be announced in October 2024. Renowned artists and dance troupes will perform cultural dancing and live music. DJ Asap will provide music throughout the evening.

Proceeds from the Gala will benefit Oasis International youth programs.

The 31st Annual African Summer Bash will occur on August 3rd, 2024, at Richardson Park (on Prairie Ave.) in Providence from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event is a collaborative effort of the African communities of Rhode Island and Oasis International -The African Center of Rhode Island. Help us make this a fully representative Bash to spotlight our magnificent cultures. This year you will be entertained by award- winning DJ ASAP and Cultural Dance groups. Tobacco Free Rhode Island (TFRI)

Oasis International , a Providence-based nonprofit serving the African immigrant and Providence community, in partnership with Rhode Island Department of Health Tobacco Control Program, is one of eight state grantees participating in the 2023 ASTHO and CDC/OSH Increasing State Menthol Capacity Learning Collaborative.

The Collaborative focuses on counter-marketing and public education community engagement expanding the capacity of menthol-specific public health work with priority populations. We examine how the built environment, systems, and policies play a role in menthol tobacco use as well as how community-led efforts can affect change. Materials and community conversations have focused on providing educational information and facilitated discussion training on targeted practices related to menthol and other flavored commercial tobacco products on specific populations. The Collaborative experience, materials, and evaluation results will be shared with a discussion on next steps of the work in Rhode Island.

Oasis International African Center of RI Annual Gala December 2, 2023

Oasis International - African Center of Rhode Island, a nonprofit social service agency located at 600 Broad Street in Providence that promotes and celebrates the varied African cultures in Rhode Island will be celebrating its 2023 scholarship and awards celebration on Saturday, December 2, 2023. The theme of the Gala is “Celebrating our Blessings and Sustaining Our Victories.” The nonprofit is celebrating 31 years of continuous services to the Southwest community of Providence with a jubilee annual dinner and awards fundraiser to support continuing youth program services.

The event will begin at 6 PM. starting with a cocktail reception at The Rhodes on the Pawtuxet at 60 Rhodes Place in Cranston, Rhode Island followed by a dinner and awards presentation program that begins at 7:30 PM.

The African Gala Keynote Speaker is Lanre Ajakaiye Chief Development Officer of United Way of Rhode Island and the Oasis Awardees for 2023 are as follows: Lifetime Achievement Award - Neil D. Steinberg Pass-President CEO RI Foundation. Community Service Award in Leadership Kathy Cloutier of Dorcas International Institute of RI. The Oasis Professional Achievement Award goes to Dr Mary A. Onyejose President & CEO and Joseph Onyejose, Chairman and CEO of Community Living of Rhode Island. Oasis Community Service Award in Diversity Yoruba 2- Lydia Perez CEO of Puerto Rican / Caribbean Community in RI. Oasis Community Service Award goes to Ineida Rocha RIDOH, Rosa Decastillo, State of RI Policy Analyst, Oasis Professional Award Quandry Olalekan CEO SHiiP -African Logistics- Delivery Made Easy. and Presidents Circle Award Nominated by African Community Leadership Forum (ACLF) - Marie Cheaye President Sierra Leone Association of RI.

Oasis International will be awarding college scholarships to high school students who have been leaders among their peers. The youth receiving scholarships are listed below. Cultural dancing and live music will be performed by Renowned Artist and Dance Troupe. DJ Asap will provide music throughout the evening.

Proceeds from the Gala will benefit Oasis International youth programs in their college pursuits. Ladies Dancers; Lydia Perez Yoruba Group- Puerto Rican Art. Oasis Youth

Steppers; Black Story Tellers, RI Cape Verdean Heritage Dancers and other

There will be a Providence Health Center Wellness Team onsite for the

community, Neighborhood’s health and BlueCross Wellness Team

providing health information, Butler Memories and aging, United Health

Care Community Plan, and Tufts Health Plan will be providing health

information. Come out and get your blood pressure, blood sugar, and

cholesterol checked for free. Getting these simple screenings can identify a

problem allowing for early treatment and prevention of serious health

problems.

Oasis International enjoyed Spring Break Week with forty of our youth, accompanied by several chaperones, on a road trip to

Washington DC. For three days and three nights, the group explored the Nation's Capitol, visiting the African American Museum, Capitol Hill State office, Arlington National Cemetery and White House.

A big thank you to Senator Whitehouse, his office, the City of Providence Rhode to Success Mentoring Programs, the RI Council of Humanities and the United Way of RI for their roles in making this year trip a success!

Dear Friends and Supporters:

As Oasis International plans its path for this new decade, we look to the horizon with an innate optimism and unbreakable commitment to the communities that we have served over the past 27 years. Given the longevity that has been achieved through the commitment of a dedicated Board of Directors, small staff, and multitude of volunteers, we are thankful for the ability to persevere, honor our mission, and for the opportunity to serve the Rhode Island community. When we reflect on the challenges of our past to sustain, build, and grow, we are reminded of the lyrics of a song that says, “My soul looks back and wonders how I got over.” Nonetheless, Oasis International continues to thrive and stand for the progress of the families and youth of the communities that we serve.

The families and youth of the Greater Providence community have experienced great social, educational, and economic challenges. They continue to weather the storm of poverty, hunger, substance abuse, crime, and societal isolation; however, as Maya Angelo writes, “But still I rise.” Yes, our families are getting stronger, and our youth are becoming more aware, encouraged, and successful. Nonetheless, many families continue to be fractured, and youth continue to be confronted with the generational hurdles of inner city living and confinement of an unintentional subculture. Some of them, with the support of various organizations and initiatives, are able to press through. Still, too many find it impossible to move forward with a glimmer of hope.

2021 suggests that we must collectively work towards a stronger and more integrated society: one based on respect, responsibility, and regeneration towards a better future. We look forward to seeking compassion, humanity, and purpose for living. Let us join together and look to the future for a brighter day and path to a fulfilling future.

For Immediate Release:

The African Leadership Community Forum-RI is heartbroken by the killing of George Floyd and wishes to reaffirm our support for the Black Lives Matter movement, to applaud the legitimate demand of protesters for equality and the right of citizens to petition their Government. The global reaction to the killing of George Floyd reminds us that nothing short of equity and abolishing all forms of racial discrimination will suffice.

We wish to thank all who have stayed on the side of justice throughout this struggle for equity and justice for people of color. All too often, black have been majorly victims of police brutality, and in our criminal justice system. Inadequate investment in our neighborhood schools and clinics, lack of economic opportunity continues to hinder the quest of Blacks for economic freedom. Deliberate oppressive Government policies have stripped people of color of their inherent dignity. This must change. Institutionalized Racism MUST STOP. Voter’s suppression MUST STOP.

The ACLF-RI is calling on all elected officials not to neglect the purpose of recent protests and the voice of the people; it will be an affront to the memory of George Floyd if we return to the status quo. We support reforming the police bill of rights, fair representation in the judiciary, equality in social determinate of health, equality in housing, equity in economic opportunity and many more.

The ACLF-RI will continue to defend the rights of citizens to peaceful protest. We will continue to partner with all stakeholders to bring an end to racism. This is a pivotal moment in the history of our country; we must not miss this rare opportunity to right the wrong of hundreds of years and let the United States of America be all inclusive, and no longer separated or judged by the color of our skins.

Oasis International Breaks Ground
An oasis of youth, culture, wellness, and economic development

On Wednesday, March 27 2019, Oasis broke ground on the African Center for Community Involvement. The center has been a huge goal since the inception of Oasis and will serve as its headquarters once completed. Oasis thanks the sponsors, vendors, and the community for their time, energy, and donations to bring this dream to life. We are glad to report back to the community that the dream are becoming a reality. As of today, the African Center structure is now in place as you can see in the series of pictures as displace. Oasis is projecting the ribbon cutting for late summer or early falls. Please bear with us as we make progress slow and steady.

We are asking you to send in your tax-deductible donation that will be used to support African Building endeavor and our youth program. For the first time in the history of RI we are now proud of a building that we can call our own. A place for families to come together and socialize. Oasis George Floyd Statement

Dear Oasis Friends and Family,

During a time of grief, trauma, mourning, and action, the staff and Board of Directors at Oasis International the African Center stand in solidarity with those who are outraged and fighting hard to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy in our country.

Black Lives Matter. It is incumbent upon us to act accordingly, and to identify those ways that we, as leaders of African Community organization, can stop perpetuating pervasive and systemic white supremacist practices and lead through our actions.

Oasis International the African Center of RI is committed to doing the hard work of dismantling even the most subtle forms of white supremacy in our community, in our practices, and in the work we do to help make our community a place where Black people can live and thrive.

We will continue to work hard to bring a diverse mix of perspectives to the community and our partners. We will create professional leadership opportunities for our young professional and youth programs. We will provide Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion training for the community we serve. Advocate for the need of our community. We will continue to prioritize Oasis voices in every community activity that we are part of and public programs.

We do not have all of the answers. We will continue to work with our leaders foster solutions. Our commitment is to continue to educate ourselves and our community; to do anti-racist work; and to create partnerships that foster a more equitable and as a nonprofit working in the public trust, we will lead in service of equity and justice for all.
